When I began my college career, I did not intend to study abroad. Several of my professors and faculty advisors encouraged me to consider spending time outside of the United States, an idea that really frightened me as I was not sure I could make it on my own in a strange, 遥远的地方. With substantial support and encouragement from the faculty at Hastings, I spent a semester at the University of Twente in Enschede, 荷兰. That experience was liberating both for my academic interests and for my self-image. I developed a strong interest in the political systems of Europe, ultimately learning far more about American politics by using it as a base of comparison with Europe.
More importantly, I developed a sense of independence and self-sufficiency.
